About John

John Lahart is from Ballyroan in Rathfarnham and lives in Knocklyon.

​

Born 20th November 1964.

​

Attended Scoil an Spiorad Naomh and Colaiste Eanna CBS.

​

Received his Bachelors and Masters Degree from Mater Dei Institute (DCU) and Psychotherapy Degree from PCI Institute, Dublin (University of Middlesex).

​

Started his professional career as a post-primary teacher before leaving teaching permanently in 2000 to become Political Adviser to then Minister of State, Tom Kitt, the same year.  He went on to serve as Special Adviser to Tom Kitt in his capacity as Government Chief Whip until 2007.

​

In early 2008, John established his own Psychotherapy Practice and Wellness business which he ran until his election as a TD for the newly-established constituency of Dublin South West in 2016.  He topped the poll at his first attempt.

John Lahart was re-elected to his third term in the Dail in 2024, increasing his vote by 2000 at the 2024 election.

John served as a Councillor on South Dublin County Council (SDCC) for four consecutive terms, having been elected at his first attempt in 1999 and topping the poll on several occasions. 

​

John Lahart is Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade.

​

He is a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs and is the Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on the European Union.

​

Previously he has served on the Budgetary Oversight Committee, Joint Health Committee, Assisted Dying and Dail Reform committees of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

​

John Lahart also leads the Irish Delegation to the OSCE PA (Organisation for Security & Co-Operation in Europe – Parliamentary Assembly). In these roles, John plays a central part in shaping Ireland’s engagement in international dialogue, diplomatic relations, and European cooperation.  He has also engaged in Election Observation Missions on behalf of the OSCE PA.

John Lahart Chairs the Oireachtas Cross-Party Committee on rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs.


He is a former party whip and temporary chairperson of Dail Eireann.

He is a Board Member of the Tallaght Drugs Task Force and PARTAS, a community-based social enterprise in Tallaght, reflecting his commitment to local social issues and enterprise development.
