Barton Cycle Track - Update

18/3/2014

Mid-March Deadline for Completion Passes but Work Coming to Conclusion

Picture
As you know, following a detailed public consultation phase in 2013, the Council has been approved funding by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to construct a high quality pedestrian and cycleway connecting Grange Road to Barton Road extension.Work began on the project prior to Christmas.  The project includes the construction of a cycle and walkway link through an area which is used as an existing pedestrian shortcut.  It will greatly reduce the walking and cycling distance to Nutgrove Shopping Centre, to bus stops and amenities.

The proposed route will include:
  • Upgrading and realignment of the existing walkway to a new 4 metre wide walking and cycling route;
  • Upgrading of the existing access points onto Grange Manor Road, Grange Road, Park Ave., and Hermitage Drive.
  • New landscape design along the route and the provision of CCTV and lighting for the route.
This area had been reserved for a road but with the upgrading of Taylor’s Lane and Fortification Hill such a road is not favoured by either the National Roads Authority or the Council.

Progress
At the moment the contractors have dug out the main line of the route through the open space area, and the drainage has been installed. Most of the main line of the route through the open space has been laid with hardcore materials. The contractors are currently leveling out the surrounding ground either side of the pathway. Kerbing starts next week. The contractors have made a good start due to the good weather before Christmas with the earth moving and foundations etc. However there is a good bit of work still to do such as: ducting, public lighting, CCTV, base and wearing courses for surfacing, boundary treatments, tie ins at eastern and western ends, which will involve some on-road works, pedestrian crossing at Loreto Park and final grading, seeding and planting etc.

With the exception of grass seeding (which usually has to await warmer weather) the majority of works are expected to be completed mid-March

Hi John,
Just wondered if you have been near the Barton Road cycle track lately? The landscaped finish that we were assured of is a joke. The whole area is just full of weeds not grass and looks worse than before the work started. Regards
