DSW BYE Election candidate Cllr John Lahart has highlighted the waiting times of older people on South Dublin County Council’s Housing Lists.
Lahart received answers to two questions he raised at this month’s Council meeting concerning how many older people (over 65 years) were actually on the Council’s list and on average how long did they have to wait for accommodation.
“No one deserves to be any length of time on a housing list” commented Lahart “and as a community and society we need to come up with imaginative ways to solve this housing crisis. Senior citizens in particular deserve to live their senior years without stress and in surroundings where they feel safe and secure. I am most concerned that they can wait for so long to be accommodated, causing them more stress and anxiety.”
“The solution involves a mix of responses – The Strategic Investment Fund should be used to finance new, high quality housing developments to tackle the housing waiting lists and bring down rental costs; and front-loading the social housing end of private developments meaning the social housing comes on stream quickly when developments begin meaning more availability of houses for people on the housing lists – these are just two ways that we can begin to seriously address this issue”
